Great Ranches

The land, the outfits, and the way of working.

A photographic and documentary record of America's working ranches — from cow camps to home places.

A working ranch at golden hour

Every craft on this site depends, in one way or another, on the ranch. The saddle exists because there is a horse to ride. The bit and spur exist because there is a way of working cattle that still requires them.

The ranches we visit are the ground truth of the project — the places where the traditions we document are still practiced daily, not preserved as museum pieces.
